Mandatory for notebooks too since April 2026

The EU is making USB-C mandatory.
Is your procurement ready?

New devices arrive without a USB-C charger, old cables no longer fit, and IT is still expected to supply every workstation. At Lindy we hear this every day – and we help you turn it into a clean charging strategy.

What the EU requirements mean in practice

  • Since 28 December 2024:
USB-C is the standard for all small mobile devices. Smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras and portable devices must charge via USB-C – regardless of manufacturer.
  • Since 28 April 2026:
The rules now extend to laptops and notebooks. New devices charge exclusively via USB-C Power Delivery – whether Apple, Dell, Lenovo or HP. This makes a single charging solution for all devices possible.
  • Unbundling:
Manufacturers may sell devices without a charger – procurement is entirely up to you. This saves manufacturers money, but for businesses it means one thing: strategic planning of the charging infrastructure is essential.
  • The challenge:
Mixed device fleets require you to account for different power classes (65W, 100W, 140W), several cable types, charging logistics and compatibility.

Three questions IT buyers need to answer now

Which power classes does your device fleet need?

A 30 W charger is enough for a smartphone but throttles any workstation. Order across the board and you pay twice – or end up with support tickets.

Do your cables deliver what the standard promises?

Only cables with an eMarker chip can charge at 100 W or 240 W. Cheap, unlabelled cables without a chip are the most common problem during rollout.

Individual workstations or central charging points?

Meeting rooms, training sessions and hot desks can often be supplied more cost-effectively with multiport charging stations than with one power supply per person.

Three answers from the Lindy range

Power classes

GaN chargers from 30 W up to the 160 W charging station

Compact GaN power supplies with 30W, 65W and 100W cover every power class from smartphone to business notebook. The 160W charging station delivers up to 140W on a single port via USB PD 3.1 – enough for workstations.

Smart Charging – overcurrent and overvoltage protection – efficiency Level 6

Cable quality

USB-C cables with eMarker – up to 240W PD

Anthra Line and Black Line offer documented power classes from 60W and 100W up to 240W PD – the full range of the EU requirements. The integrated eMarker chip ensures that the charging power actually reaches the device.

USB4 up to 40Gbit/s – up to 10-year warranty – data sheets for tender documentation

Central charging points

Multiport station for meeting and training rooms

The charging station supplies up to six devices at once – with automatic load balancing and dividers for tablets. One charging point instead of many individual power supplies, proven in schools, libraries and offices.

3 USB-C & 3 USB-A – load balancing at full occupancy & country-specific power cords included

Together we'll work out the right combination for your device fleet – based on your actual devices, workstations and rollout plans. Not by catalogue, but by need.

Which charging solution for which devices?

A guide for your procurement – based on EU requirements and best practice:

Device type Typical power requirement Matching LINDY solution
Smartphones & headsets 15-30W 30W GaN charger; USB-C cables rated up to 60W easily cover the demand
Tablets & e-readers 20-45W 65W GaN charger with power reserve; 60W cable sufficient
Ultrabooks & business notebooks 45-65W 65W GaN charger; 100W cable with eMarker as a future-proof standard
Performance notebooks
(16", i7/Ryzen 7)
90-100W 100W GaN charger; 100W cable with eMarker essential
Mobile workstations 100-140W Charging station with USB PD 3.1 (up to 140W on a single port); 240W EPR cable
Multi-device workstation,
meeting room
100-160W combined Multiport charging station with automatic load balancing instead of individual power supplies

Low power still charges
– just more slowly

USB Power Delivery automatically negotiates the charging power between charger and device. A 65W charger therefore cannot damage a notebook that actually needs a 100W power supply – it is simply supplied with a maximum of 65W. However, if the notebook draws more power under full load than the charger delivers, the battery drains despite the connected charger, or charges only very slowly.

The most common weak point:  the cable

Charging power above 60W can only be transmitted via cables with an eMarker chip. Without one, the Power Delivery system limits the current to 3 amps – i.e. a maximum of 60W at 20 volts, no matter how much power the charger could provide. So for existing cables with unknown specifications: don't guess – check the power class.

Shared charging infrastructure instead of individual power supplies

Meeting and training rooms as well as hot desks can often be supplied more cost-effectively with multiport charging stations than with one power supply per workstation. A station with intelligent load distribution shares the total power dynamically – in practice, users rarely all charge at the same time. The key selection criterion: not the maximum output, but the power per port when all ports are in use.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Which USB-C charger is right for my MacBook?
That depends on your MacBook model. As a rule: MacBook Air (13-15 inch) needs at least 65W, MacBook Pro up to 16 inch needs 96-140W. Check the rating label on your old power supply. Our support team will be happy to help – just email us your model!
Can I charge several devices at once?
Yes! Our multi-port chargers are designed for exactly that. However, the power is shared between the ports: a 65W charger with two USB-C ports, for example, splits its output. For optimal charging of several high-power devices, we recommend a charger with a higher output or a charging station.
Are LINDY chargers compatible with all brands?
Yes. LINDY follows the international USB standards (USB-C Power Delivery, USB-A). This means they work with iPhone, Android, MacBook, iPad and laptops – regardless of manufacturer. The only exception: older devices with proprietary connectors.
What does Power Delivery (PD) mean?
Power Delivery is the USB standard for fast, intelligent charging. The charger communicates with your device – and "agrees" on the optimal charging power. This saves time and protects your device from overcharging. The higher the PD output (e.g. 140W), the faster even large devices charge.
Does the USB-C requirement also apply to existing devices?
No. The requirements only apply to devices newly placed on the market. Existing devices may continue to be used – but that is precisely what creates the need for advice in mixed device fleets.
As a company, do I now have to purchase chargers separately?
Increasingly, yes. Manufacturers may ship devices without a power supply, and are doing so more and more often. This is also an opportunity: a standardised charging setup is cheaper and easier to manage than a zoo of manufacturer-specific power supplies.
Will any USB-C cable do?
For 100 W to 240 W, the cable needs an eMarker chip, otherwise the charging power is throttled. We help you choose the right cables for your power classes – including documentation for your procurement.
